Elevation profile ground and pipeline profile

I'm having trouble getting the elevation profile band to work. I've added the default band and chart and tried to use esri's elevation service and the Z values from our layer. No matter the settings I try I can't get any elevation profile to work.

I'd ideally like to show the ground profile from our own DEM along with the profile of the pipeline using the shapes Z values in a single chart.

Is this possible? First steps seems like getting the profile band to work at all though.

    Sorry for the delay Max, can you succeed in using the default Esri elevation service for the chart?  If so you can add another chart using your Z values to see both data sets in the same band.  Getting the profile from your DEM would require a workflow as a custom data source to get the values from the DEM and provide them to the chart.
